POTS AWAY!! Wyevale Containers, covering some 50 acres and growing 2 million container plants annually, continues to expand both in area and production techniques. Having conducted trials into peat alternatives over the last 8 years, we discovered that reducing peat has a knock on effect of increased water and feeding requirements. However, we have now got the right formula to enable us to reduce our peat usage by 35% whilst water requirements remain static. The Government is aiming for peat use in the industry to be reduced by 40% by 2005. We are ahead of that schedule and are on target to reach and probably exceed it in 2004. |

We believe that this combined with our UK and local provenance stock and integrated pest management system, will give Landscape Architects full confidence in specifying environmentally friendly plant material from Wyevale Nurseries. |

A MODERN APPROACH TO LIFTING FORESTRY TRANSPLANTS Wyevale Transplants has taken the forward looking step of investing in a new lifting machine capable of selecting individual rows within the beds of transplant crops. This lifting machine manufactured by Egedal nursery machinery of Esjberg Denmark is the first of its kind to be imported into Britain. It incorporates the latest designs in plant lifting technology presenting trees ready dug and shaken of soil to be loaded on pallets and thence to the grading shed. . |

The machine cuts the labour required in lifting by some 50% over previous methods and allows faster response time to orders and a rapid transit of lifted plants to the protection of indoor grading and bagging. Up to 50,000 plants can be lifted in a working day. |

Wyevale Hawkins, one of the UK’s leading container grown tree specialists, further expands its tree unit. A new container area with a capacity of over 1000 trees has been developed at our Hereford nursery. In response to the increasing demand for 14-20cm girth container trees, Wyevale Hawkins completed the second phase of its tree nursery in February 2002. The unit has been developed especially to grow trees in the unique ‘AIR POT’ system. The benefits of the ‘Air Pot’ system is that the young root tips are air pruned as they reach the edge of the air pot, inducing lateral root buds to be initiated. The extremely fibrous root systems produce trees with a high success rate when planted out. Click here for full stock list.
