A member of our staff has recently just got back from a plant hunting trip to Colombia (January, 2017).

Ben Gregory, our Product Development Coordinator, visited three nurseries in the country searching for some unusual plants while on holiday in December.

The 24-year-old from Worcester explained: “Darwin Colombia in Bogota is an indirect supplier of ours. I wanted to experience the production style, techniques and quality of the nursery. I also wanted to explore if there were any further opportunities with them for the future that we are not currently making the most of.

“It was a very smart production facility with an impressive team working there. The staff were extremely passionate and knowledgeable. The site was very clean and tidy, which is extremely important to us as a customer. The nursery is blessed with a wonderful climate as well.

“I also visited two more nurseries with Jairo Cadavid, the President of the country’s brand new Association of Colombian Nurseries and Ornamental Growers called Colviveros. This helped me to develop my understanding of Colombian Nursery Production and to discuss potential opportunities that we may have working together.”

The first nursery Ben visited with Jairo was called Vivero Cinco Sentidos, which translates as nursery of the five senses, in San Antonio del Tequendama about one hour outside of Bogota.

Ben added: “At Vivero Cinco Sentidos they grew a very wide range of garden plants from succulents, cacti, tropical annuals and perennials as well as a speciality in orchids. The orchids were stunning. There were many innovative and added value interesting products.

“We then visited Rumhora Nurseries where we were shown around by the owner Carlos Castro. This nursery exports green cut stems and bouquets in very innovative ways. They do a lot of painted bouquets, love them or hate them, they looked stunning.

“These visits were a great insight into the current horticultural industry in Colombia. The visits helped me gain a good understanding of the local products as well as the style, intensity and quality of production. There are a multitude of opportunities emerging in this area of the industry and we will continue to develop our ideas further.”
