A GARDEN designer from Gwent is currently building his first show garden at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park and has had a helping hand from us.
Dave Hodson from Usk is creating a garden for the show, which runs from July 20 until 24, and we have been on hand with planting advice and plant supply.
Dave said: “This is my first show garden and Wyevale Nurseries has been a great help as I wanted to make sure I got the planting exactly right. My garden is entitled ‘A Little Escape’. The philosophy is simple, ‘Go for It!’ be big, be bold, let your imagination soar. A garden must be practical but if it’s not beautiful, sexy and exciting it’s a missed opportunity.
“My design shows how even a small garden with no attractive borrowed landscape can fire the imagination. It features strong triangular shapes that draw the eye down to the eclectic planting based on the jungle paintings of Henri Rousseau.
“Although Rousseau never left France, he created dark, alluring tableaux of invented plants and wildlife, and imaginings of what lurks deep in the forest. The lush green palette of plants incorporates different leaf shapes, sizes and textures and feature combinations that are not usually associated, such as Euphorbia, Fatsia, Hakonechloa and Catalpa.
“The garden will also feature specially commissioned work from contemporary British ceramicist Jo Lee.”
Dave has been designing and building gardens for 20 years. Gardening was a hobby that turned into a profession and then a passion. Dave learnt on the job and studied at Leeds City evening classes and in 2015 he graduated from the Pickard School of Garden Design earning a distinction in the Diploma PSGD.
The garden is currently being built by Goodwin Hill Garden Design and Construction. Judging at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park will take place on Tuesday, July 19.
Oliver Phipps, Garden Design and Domestic Landscape Sales Executive at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “We’re delighted we could help Dave with his debut garden at Tatton Park. We were on hand with our expert knowledge and it was great to show Dave around our nurseries so he could see first-hand the quality of the large range of plants we offer.
“In the end we supplied Dave with Agapanthus ‘Lilac Lullaby’, Fatsia japonica ‘Spider’s Web’, Hakonechlioa macra ‘Aureola’, Hosta ‘Royal Standard’ and Kniphofia uvaria ‘Flamenco’. We wish him the best of luck in the judging.”
