AN EXCLUSIVE Dahlia Sweet Candy Series from one of the UK’s leading commercial nurseries has been officially launched this month (July, 2016).
Dahlia ‘Lemon Sherbet’, Dahlia ‘Rhubarb & Custard’ and Dahlia ‘Strawberry Bon Bon’ are included in the series from Wyevale Nurseries, which is based in Hereford.
Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “The Dahlia Sweet Candy Series includes three beautiful collaret Dahlias in complimentary colour tones. These show stopping flowers are compact growing and offer dark green foliage.
“We ran an in house competition across all our members of staff to suggest names for these plants, then put the suggestions out to our retail customers to vote on their preferred name.
“Sweet Candy Series was put forward by Mandy Hardy, our Label Room Technical Specialist, and this was a clear winner.”
The Dahlia Sweet Candy Series have a uniform height across the whole series and are very floriferous. They have sturdy stems and are strong, vigorous plants. The Dahlias have a long flowering time across the summer until the first frosts and as they are tall growing they are ideal for mid-back borders.
Dahlia ‘Strawberry Bon Bon’ has stunning, bright pink single outer petals with a matching coloured inner ruffled collaret ring. Dahlia ‘Lemon Sherbet’ has beautiful, pure lemon yellow single outer petals with a matching coloured inner ruffled collaret ring. Dahlia ‘Rhubarb & Custard’ has two toned peach/red and cream single outer petals, darkening to the centre, with a matching coloured inner ruffled collaret ring.
Adam added: “Dahlia ‘White Cockatoo’ is another stunning new introduction. What sets this Dahlia apart is its beautiful ruffled ivory white double flowers, which nestle amongst the dark, almost black foliage. It is compact growing suitable for containers or borders.
“All of the Dahlias are brand new to the market and are exclusive to us. They have also all been produced by New World Plants in Herefordshire.”
Wyevale Nurseries is one of the largest family-run wholesale nurseries in the UK. It was established in 1930 by Harry Williamson, a horticulturist and entrepreneur. It became the company it is today under the leadership of his son, Peter, who sadly passed away in 2011.
The Williamsons’ saw the opportunity to sell their product to an undeveloped retail market, creating one of the first garden centres, followed by a chain. In 1987, the retail side needed to expand and the 19 garden centres were sold as a PLC.
The family then turned its focus to Wyevale Nurseries Ltd. It continues to be a family-run business with ownership and joint chairmanship currently being held by the third generation, Heather and Simeon Williamson, with plans for the fourth generation to takeover in the future.
Wyevale Nurseries has a significant product range and is regularly introducing new plants. It offers a large variety of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants to garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners.
