Next week (September 11, 2017) we’re entering five new plants in to the New Product Awards at Glee, which is held at the NEC in Birmingham.
We have submitted Senecio candicans ‘Angel Wings’, Eucomis ‘Aloha Lily Leia’, Phormium ‘Blondie’, Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ and Morus ‘Mojo Berry’ to the Plant, Seed & Bulb category at the event.
Ben Gregory, our Product Development Manager, said: “This year we are delighted to be able to enter five new plants to the New Product Awards at Glee, which runs from September 11 until 13. We have some very interesting and different plants so we have our fingers crossed that this year we manage to scoop an award.
“Senecio candicans ‘Angel Wings’ has extra-large silky and silver-white coloured leaves, which provide a dramatic impact for this easy to grow plant. Senecio candicans ‘Angel Wings’ scooped a Bronze Medal at Plantarium 2016. It’s a fantastic tub plant and easily combined with other plants.
“Eucomis ‘Aloha Lily Leia’ is a beautiful compact variety packed with flower spikes. Crimped, strappy foliage and deep purple spotted flower stems add to the tropical magic of this plant. The flowers are very dark purple in bud opening to a slightly lighter shade star shape. The flowers make for excellent cutting and give off a distinct coconut scent.
“Phormium ‘Blondie’ is a new twist on Phormium. It grows to just 60cm tall and produces long arching leaves, which cascade beautifully over its pot. The stunning cream and white variegation makes this Phormium unique. It was discovered in New Zealand as a sport of Phormium ‘Cream Delight’ and is hardy to -10°.”
Alstroemeria ‘Little Miss Zoe’ a bright cream and green variegation, which contrasts with deep pinky-red flowers to create an eye-catching display. It is compact growing so creates a small dome of foliage with a mass of flowers held just above the foliage.
Ben added: “We are also delighted to be the first UK nursery to produce a commercial crop for 2018 of Morus ‘Mojo Berry’. It is a revolutionary new dwarf variety of Mulberry that fruits at a young age. Reaching just 75cm tall and 45cm wide, ‘Mojo Berry’ is a perfect patio plant suitable for any garden.
“It is self-pollinating, fully hardy and fruits on both new and old wood, meaning it will be producing mulberries within the first year as opposed to the usual eight or nine years it would take. Another unique feature about ‘Mojo Berry’ is that it will produce fruit throughout the summer from May until September. It is a 21st Century Mulberry and has been promoted in The Telegraph by presenter and garden designer, James Wong.
“Morus ‘Mojo Berry’ also won 2017 Chelsea Flower Show’s Best New Plant. It was marketed at Chelsea as Mulberry ‘Charlotte Russe’, but will be launched commercially as ‘Mojo Berry’.”
