Wyevale Nurseries Environmental Standards
Not only are the plants we grow ‘green’ but the way in which we approach their production is truly green.
Targets and Key Improvements
Trials and Research
Not only are the plants we grow ‘green’ but the way in which we approach their production is truly green. We operate an environmental management system and are very proud to have been accredited to the European ISO14001 standard for the past six years.
Our aims during the production and delivery of our plants are always to minimise the environmental impact at local, national and global level.
Wyevale Nurseries is committed to the prevention of pollution, to reducing any environmental risk, to conserving energy and natural resources, to increasing recycling and thereby minimising waste and to protecting natural habitats and wildlife.
Wyevale Nurseries will make its Environmental Policy available to staff, customers and the general public.
All activities on our Nursery have been assessed for their environmental impact and those with the highest impact have controls and targets for improvement in place. All relevant information and targets are publically displayed on notice boards and all new staff given a thorough environmental induction.
ISO14001 does not state requirements for environmental performance, but maps out a framework that a company or organizations can follow to set up an effective Environmental Management System. It is audited externally twice a year by a third party (BSI) to ensure compliance and accreditation is then given every three years.
Water recycling from beds
We have targets set for:
• Waste reduction and recycling
• Water use efficiency
• Reduction in chemical use (zero use of neonicotinoids)
• Carbon reduction
Key improvements that have been made:
• Reduction of waste to landfill from 85 Tons to 20 Tons
• Clear segregation and recycling of plastic covers fleeces and any other plastics
• Recycling water up to 25,000 cubic meters
• Reduction in electricity usage in Propagation
• Increase in non-chemical plant treatments and controls in place to review and promote
To Support elements of improved environmental performance, Wyevale Nurseries also take part in DEFRA-backed trials and research programmes.
These have included consortiums to look at water use efficiency, peat reduction and peat-free growing media, integrated pest management and reduction in pesticide use.
We currently use 40% peat reduced compost (33% in the pot, 7% in topping).
