Wyevale Transplants is the section of Wyevale Nurseries producing field-grown seedlings and transplants. The range grown includes hedging plants and woodland trees, native, ornamental and forestry. Located on the Gloucester-Hereford borders near Ledbury, the team of some12 staff raise the range of young plants from seed or cuttings, all reared outdoors. Director Steve Ashworth comments `this is the most efficient way of growing young trees and hedging, starting from seed sown in-situ in the field: no peat, no pots, no added heat, no polytunnels, hardy as nature intended. Plants are compact to transport and young stock requires no staking to establish.` The company has been growing for 22 years on the same 220 acre farm, rotating crops with a pig herd which keeps the land in good heart; the sandy loam soil benefitting from the natural fertility of strawy manure.
Seed is collected from British sources wherever possible, plants are grown for usually 1 or 2 years, some 3 or 4 years, before sale. Culture is directed toward a good root system by undercutting and transplanting to confer the best start when planted out. Top varieties grown are native hedging dominated by Hawthorn but also a range of lesser species, woodland trees especially Oak and Ash and ornamental hedging such as Beech, Hornbeam, Laurel and Box. Also a range of shelter varieties such as Alders, Willows and Poplars and ornamental shrubs such as Dogwoods and Roses.
